Base44 AI Review: I Built an Author Store with AI

Last Updated • 3 November 2026

Can an AI app builder turn a detailed prompt into a professionally designed website? To find out, I tested Base44 by creating an author store with a complete visual identity, homepage sections, book mockups, and interactive animations.

In this edition of Al Developer Lab by Coding Professors, Base44 website-building workflow, design capabilities, editing tools, and collaboration features using its free plan.

The main focus of this experiment was UI/UX design rather than backend development. Here's what I tested, what impressed me, and where Base44 still needs improvement.

What Is Base44?

Base44 is an AI-powered platform for building websites and applications using natural-language prompts. It also offers features for developers, including GitHub repository connections, collaborative workflows, and tools for managing projects.

The platform provides an AI-assisted building experience where users can describe their requirements and refine the generated result through chat and editing tools.

For this test, I wanted to see how well Base44 could understand a detailed branding and design brief and turn it into a visually appealing author store.

What I Built: An Author Store

I prepared a detailed prompt for an author store. It included the branding direction, homepage structure, hero section, featured novel, and other design requirements.

I submitted the prompt using Base44's build workflow and selected its automatic AI model.

After the generation process, Base44 produced a complete website preview. It also generated visual assets, including book mockups and a logo.

The result was impressive from a design perspective. The website followed the requested brand identity and included content that matched the overall direction of the project.

What I Tested in Base44

1. AI-Powered Website Generation

I used a detailed prompt to describe the author store and its visual requirements.

Base44 processed the instructions and generated the website through its chat-based workflow. The interface displayed the working logs on the left and the live preview on the right.

This made it easier to follow the generation process while seeing the result.

The platform handled the design brief well, especially its branding direction and content requirements.

2. UI/UX Design and Visual Quality

This was the strongest part of my Base44 test.

The generated website included book mockups, images, a logo, and a visually engaging homepage. The overall layout followed the requested brand identity, and the content writing was also handled well.

The animations were another highlight. I was particularly impressed by the interactive animation and moving background elements.

Base44 demonstrated strong visual capabilities, making it interesting for designers, founders, and developers who want to create polished website concepts quickly.

However, the result was not perfect. The generated logo overlapped with the homepage, and I noticed an unexplained dot in the hero section at 100% browser zoom.

These were relatively small issues, but they showed that AI-generated designs still require human review and refinement.

3. Canvas and Design Workflow

One feature I found interesting was Base44's canvas, which provides a Figma-like workspace for working on designs.

This adds another way to approach the creative process instead of relying entirely on the chat interface.

For people who enjoy visual design workflows, having a canvas alongside AI-assisted generation can be useful.

4. AI Editing and Developer Tools

Base44 also provides an option to edit the website using AI.

This is useful when you want to refine an existing result instead of starting the project again.

Another interesting feature is the ability to connect an existing GitHub repository. This could make Base44 relevant to developers who want to explore AI-assisted workflows within existing projects.

I also explored the dashboard, which included options related to SEO, marketing, analytics, and API settings.

These features make the platform worth exploring beyond its initial website-generation capabilities. However, I did not test the complete backend or integrations in this experiment.

5. Team Collaboration

Base44 offers the ability to add collaborators and work with team members.

This is a useful addition for teams working on website or application projects. Instead of keeping the entire workflow limited to one person, users can involve other team members.

For developers and small teams, collaboration can make an AI-assisted workflow more practical.

6. Free Plan and Credits

I tested Base44 using its free plan, which provided message credits, daily limits, and integration credits.

The platform also offered different AI model options, although accessing other models required an upgrade during my test.

One issue I noticed was that the credit-usage display had not updated after the build, so I could not confirm the final credit consumption from that screen.

Another limitation was custom-domain connection: it was not available on the free plan during my test.

Final Verdict: Is Base44 Worth Trying?

My Base44 experiment was a positive experience, particularly when it came to UI/UX design, branding, content writing, and animations.

It handled the author-store prompt well and generated a visually appealing website with relevant imagery and book mockups. I also found its Figma-like canvas, GitHub integration, AI editing, and team collaboration features interesting.

There were a few design issues that needed refinement, and the free plan had limitations. More importantly, this experiment focused on the frontend experience, so it does not establish how well the backend, database, authentication, or other integrations perform.

My verdict: Base44 is highly recommended for exploring AI-assisted website and app design. Its visual capabilities and additional developer workflow features make it worth considering for designers, founders, and developers who want to turn ideas into polished prototypes.

If you're planning to build a production application, remember to test the backend, integrations, and complete user workflows separately.
